The restaurant industry was dramatically impacted by the pandemic, putting millions of people across the country out of work. Richmond restaurants, which have garnered national attention and brought home numerous high profile awards in recent years, have struggled to stay in business. In episode 4, the BetterMed team welcomes a special guest, Patrick Phelan, co-owner and executive chef of the award-winning restaurant Longoven. Discussions include the lack of leadership in government, the structural and emotional pivots made to survive and how the impact of the pandemic will change the industry forever.
Patrick Phelan is the co-owner and chef of Longoven in Richmond, Virginia. Longoven launched a series of monthly pop-ups at Sub Rosa Bakery in September of 2014. Longoven, which has twice been named Bon Appétit’s 50 Best Restaurants including ranking in the “Hot 10” list, is located in Richmond’s historic Scott’s Addition neighborhood. Longoven offers a tasting and a la carte menu that changes regularly based on seasonality and availability of products from local farmers and purveyors.
